A legal procedure by which a creditor can collect what a debtor owes by ordering a third party, such as an employer, to pay the debtor’s wages or bank account directly to the creditor.

Example

A court orders garnishment of a debtor’s wages to satisfy a judgment owed to a creditor, with a portion of the debtor’s paycheck automatically sent to the creditor each month.
