Tax

Small Business Deduction

Also called: SBD, CCPC Rate

A reduced federal corporate tax rate on a limited amount of active business income for Canadian-controlled private corporations.

The SBD lowers tax on active business income up to an annual limit for qualifying CCPCs. Access is reduced or eliminated by factors including large taxable capital and significant passive investment income, and associated corporations must share one limit.

Why it matters: corporate structuring choices can inadvertently reduce or eliminate access to the deduction across a group of companies.
