Labour Market Impact Assessment

Also called: LMIA

A federal assessment confirming that hiring a foreign worker will not negatively affect the Canadian labour market.

Employers usually must obtain a positive LMIA before a foreign national can apply for many work permits, typically after advertising the role to Canadians and permanent residents. A number of streams are LMIA-exempt.

Why it matters: LMIA processing adds significant time and cost, so identifying an available exemption early materially changes hiring timelines.
