Work Permit

Authorisation for a foreign national to work in Canada, usually tied to conditions on employer, role or location.

Employer-specific permits name a particular employer and role; open permits do not. Working outside a permit's conditions can jeopardise both the worker's status and the employer's ability to hire in future.

Why it matters: changing an employee's role or location may require a new permit even when the person is already lawfully in Canada.
